Introduction

Thirdhand came around naturally as a solution for a problem that I observed working with remote development teams. I found that I was being asked for assets in the middle of the night. The idea was to create a repo that developers could pull assets from via slack.

I decided to pursue the idea as Slackbot. Thirdhand is a centralized database for brand assets that is distributed via slack commands. I wrote the bot to take basic commands using the @thirdhand handle, and deliver responses using the Slack API’s LISTEN functions.

Brand Identity

Thirdhand’s brand identity was designed to be appealing to other designers, while being buttoned up enough to work as a solution for larger businesses. Since I knew that the primary interface for the product would be through Slack, I worked to make sure that the brand was expressed eloquently through Slack’s native UI. By specifying avatars, meta descriptions, and implementing branded copy, the product is able to sound unique, within the context of the Slack app.

Color Palette

Thirdhand’s color palette was one that needed to stand on its own, even when it came through in a slack message. I wanted to steer clear of any colors that might be confused with Slack’s own interface or branding, so we settled on shades of blue radiating out from a central brand color we called Royal Azure.

Website

I designed a marketing site for Thirdhand when I came up with the idea, as a way to explore what the forward facing persona of the brand would be. The website needed to assure designers that this would be a tool that could help them do more with less, without getting in the way.
